Our Last Day in Cannes

Betsy had made reservations at La Colombe d’or (The Golden Dove) in St. Paul de Vence for Monday lunch as a gift to Tom and I for our birthdays, and for hers as well which is June 18. Tom and I had been to St. Paul three or four times on past trips and it is one of the best of the medieval perched villages. But La Colombe d’Or! Oo la la, the best we could manage in the past was to sneak in to view the artwork and hope they wouldn’t notice that we weren’t paying customers and throw us out on our respective ears.

La Colombe d’Or is a venerable old restaurant and hotel in St. Paul where starving artists from Picasso’s day would come to eat or stay and, in lieu of paying in francs, which they didn’t have, would pay in art. The result is that the walls are filled with Picassos, Miros, Klees, Calders and other artists that I wouldn’t begin to recognize. The picture below of Tom and I with the thumb is one of the sculptures in the courtyard. Lunching at La Colombe d’Or and then the prospect of dinner at Francine’s was quite a fine way to spend a Monday.
